It is after a while since I had a chance to leave my country for a short vacation. Well of course, with all work hassles topped with academic stress, it is great to have a short get away. This time, I chose Perth as a destination for which, it was not planned in the beginning, but after our friends came back from their vacation from Perth last year, so we decided to go, together.
This time it is not for Perth alone, but we are traveling far south from there as well, about 300KM from the main city towards Fremantle, Bunbury, Busselton, Augusta, and Albany, before we head off back to Perth again. As I said, it was only a short vacation, a whole one week, where we had a chance to visit most of the interesting venues at these locations.
Day 1: Perth - Fremantle - Bunbury
We departed from KLIA2 Airport with AirAsiaX flight at 12.30am 19th August 2017 and safely landed at Perth Airport around 5.00am on the same day. Since Kuala Lumpur and Perth are both within the same time zone (lucky), so we are not experiencing the "so-much-expected" jet lag. After all the customs and immigration checking, we are still having an ample time to queue up to purchase mobile prepaid sim card, and we chose Optus as it offers the best deal as compared to other carriers, at AUD15 for 1GB data and 7 days unlimited calls and sms between numbers within the same carrier (I think). It was a long queue as when we complete purchasing the sim card, it was almost 7.00am, and the weather was cold to us who are too accustomed to hot and humid surroundings, at about 11°C with soft breeze and light raining, where we were literally breathing fogs. So, we decided to have a short breakfast and grab a hot drinks while waiting for our car rental to pick us up from the airport at 8.30am. We had a considerably good breakfast of sandwich and hot chocolate as to wait for our next stop at Fremantle. By the way, trust me when I said, the hot chocolate is not even hot considering how chilling the weather is.
Once we were picked up from the airport and brought to the car rental station, the arrangement was pretty quick as it took less than 1/2 an hour to complete, and before we knew, we hit the road off for Fremantle.
Fremantle
Perth to Fremantle is a very short journey of about 30 minutes (maybe because the journey has been cut short as for travelling from the airport to the car rental station), and our first stop at Fremantle is the Fremantle Prison. We just snapped a few photos outside of the entrance and left for Fremantle Market right after that. If you are expecting they sell fish as the market was so close to the sea, you may be slightly disappointed as they do not. Well maybe they have few fishes, but it is not purposely for that. What you may discover at the market are fresh fruits and vegetables, freshly baked pastries, foods, handicrafts and merchandises, and so on. We grabbed a big box of strawberry (well, it is Jaja who bought them), and then we stop for a while at Megabes Products to purchase some good souvenirs to bring back home. This is one of many places where you can have selected items at the price of $10 for 3 or 4 packs.
Although pretty much excited of the items-price displayed, we just grabbed a few of those and kept walking for a good few hundred meters to the infamous cafe, San Churro. There we goes as the eyes "cannot tahan" of chocolate temptation, we ordered Churros Fiesta at the price of $34.95 (18 churros and 6 choices of chocolate dips), a cup of Milk Chocolate ($5.95), Hazelnut ($5.95), and mineral water. Of course, 18 churros are too much for 4 pax (I think), so we "tapau" them to be eaten later.
Then we hit the road, and make a good circle in Fremantle to look for the The Roundhouse. This is a historic place of which it was designed by Henry Willey Reveley; construction commenced in 1830 and was completed on 18 January 1831. Intended as a prison, it had eight cells and a jailer's residence, all of which opened onto a central courtyard. The design was based on the Panopticon, a kind of prison designed by philosopher Jeremy Bentham.
Bunbury
It was a little bit past midday when we hit the road again, heading for Bunbury, for which we are going to spend a night at the Discovery Parks - Bunbury. It was a +/- 172 km drive along the Bussell Highway. We reached there after 2 or more hours of driving (mind you, the speed limit is meant to be obeyed), and after a short unpacking, I was fast asleep (probably of lack of sleep during flight the night before due to total excitement) and only awoke at almost or a little bit past dusk. Missed the sunset of course.
To be continued...
